Sohar Free Zone is one of Oman's leading investment destinations because it combines a deep-water port, an established heavy-industry cluster and a location close to the UAE. Investors get 100% foreign ownership, 0% import and re-export duty and, under the zone's published terms, a corporate tax holiday of up to 25 years linked to Omanisation targets. It suits manufacturers, logistics firms and traders that serve GCC customers rather than the local Omani market.

This guide explains *why* investors choose Sohar, what the zone does well, where its limits are, and who it suits. For step-by-step setup and costs, see the separate guides linked below.

## What is Sohar Free Zone?

Sohar Freezone was established in 2010 by Royal Decree 123/2010 and covers about 45 km² next to SOHAR Port in North Al Batinah. Port and free zone are managed by SOHAR Port and Freezone, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of Oman and the Port of Rotterdam. A bonded corridor links the free zone to the port, so cargo can move between them without customs clearance.

The zone is supervised by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), which also oversees Duqm, Salalah and the other zones. Our [Sohar Free Zone page](https://omanregister.com/free-zones/sohar-free-zone/) gives a short profile.

## Six reasons investors choose Sohar

### 1. Location close to the UAE and GCC

Sohar is the nearest major Omani industrial port to the UAE border, with direct road access to the Gulf. The planned Hafeet Rail line to Abu Dhabi is expected to begin trial operations in late 2027, which should cut land transport times further. For a company whose customers are in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, this is often the deciding factor.

### 2. A working port and industrial cluster

Unlike newer zones, Sohar already hosts large metals, petrochemical, food and logistics operations. That means suppliers, contractors, utilities and skilled labour are available nearby. Recent additions include United Solar's polysilicon plant, which has started production and has attracted international financing, including from IFC.

### 3. Full ownership and duty-free trade

- 100% foreign ownership with no local partner or sponsor.
- 0% customs duty on goods imported into the zone and on re-exports.
- No restriction on repatriating capital and profits.
- Oman's free trade agreements with the United States and Singapore can help qualifying goods made in Oman.

### 4. Tax holiday tied to local hiring

The zone's published regulations (Ministerial Decision 35/2016) grant a 10-year income tax exemption to working companies that reach at least 15% Omanisation, extendable up to 25 years if the company reaches 25%, 35% and 50% Omanisation in later periods. Under the 2025 Special Economic Zones and Free Zones Law, new enterprises receive a 10-year base exemption, extendable for qualifying activities, while existing companies keep their original terms. See our [Sohar regulations guide](https://omanregister.com/regulations-and-legal-framework-for-operating-in-sohar-freezone-2026/) for detail.

### 5. Licences for both industry and trading SMEs

Sohar issues four main licence categories: industrial, light manufacturing and assembly, logistics, and general trade. The general trade licence can be registered electronically, which makes Sohar accessible to small trading companies, not just large manufacturers.

### 6. One-stop shop and new digital rules

Licensing, permits, visas and customs paperwork run through the zone's one-stop shop. OPAZ's Executive Regulations issued in September 2026 add automatic licence issue and renewal where data and documents pass digital checks, and set time limits for decisions on many applications.

## Main investment sectors in Sohar

| Sector | Why Sohar works |
|---|---|
| Metals and minerals | Existing steel and aluminium supply chain and port access for bulk cargo |
| Petrochemicals and plastics | Feedstock and downstream processing nearby |
| Food processing and storage | Port handling for grain and food imports; access to GCC consumers |
| Logistics and warehousing | Bonded corridor to the port; road access to the UAE |
| Renewable energy supply chain | Solar materials manufacturing and green-industry projects |
| Light manufacturing and assembly | Lower land and labour costs than many Gulf hubs |
| General trading | Electronic general trade licence for re-export businesses |

## Limits to understand before choosing Sohar

- **No direct local retail.** A free zone company cannot simply sell into mainland Oman; goods entering the Omani market are treated as imports. Many companies add a distributor or a [mainland company](https://omanregister.com/mainland-company-registration-oman/).
- **Omanisation rises over time.** To keep the tax holiday you must keep increasing the share of Omani staff.
- **Excluded sectors.** Banks, insurers, telecoms, contracting and transport companies do not qualify for the new law's tax exemption.
- **Industrial projects take longer.** You need a lease, building permits and an environmental permit, which can take up to about 90 days where a full assessment is required.
- **Personal income tax from 2028.** Oman will tax resident individuals' income above OMR 42,000 a year at 5% from January 2028; the zone's "0% personal income tax" message should be read with that in mind for high earners.

## Who Sohar Free Zone suits best

- Manufacturers selling to the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC.
- Logistics, freight and warehousing companies using SOHAR Port.
- Food importers and processors.
- Trading SMEs that re-export rather than sell locally.
- Investors comparing Gulf locations who want lower land and operating costs than the larger UAE hubs.
