Most foreigners live in Oman on a residence visa linked to a sponsor: an employer, their own company, or a resident family member. Investors with around OMR 200,000 to commit can apply for the 10-year golden residency, retirees with a fixed income of OMR 4,000 a month can get a five-year permit, and citizenship is possible only after about 15 years of continuous residence. Which route suits you depends on your money, skills and family situation.
This guide explains each route, the documents you need and the steps in 2026, with the mistakes that most often cause delays.
Which residency route fits your profile?
| Your situation | Most realistic route | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Professional with a job offer | Employment visa | Omani employer with Ministry of Labour approval for your role |
| Business owner or entrepreneur | Investor visa via your own company | Registered company in Oman (mainland or free zone) |
| Investor with OMR 200,000+ | Golden residency (10 years) | Qualifying investment held in your name |
| Spouse, child or parent of a resident | Family joining visa | Sponsor's salary and relationship documents |
| Retiree with pension income | Retirement residence permit | Fixed monthly income of at least OMR 4,000 |
| Student | Student visa | Admission to a recognised Omani institution |
Employment visa: working for an Omani company
An employment visa is the most common route. The employer, not the employee, drives the process:
- The employer obtains a work permit (labour clearance) from the Ministry of Labour for the specific profession.
- The Royal Oman Police issues an entry visa for employment.
- After arrival, you complete a medical test and fingerprinting, and the employer applies for your resident card.
- The visa is usually issued for two years and renewed by the employer.
Points to know:
- Omanisation: many professions are reserved for Omani nationals, and the Ministry of Labour expands the list from time to time. Check whether your job title can legally be filled by a foreigner before you resign from your current job.
- Changing employer requires the new employer to obtain a fresh work permit; rules on releases (NOCs) have been relaxed, but the process still takes time.
- Qualifications: engineers, doctors and other regulated professionals need their credentials verified by the relevant Omani body.

Investor visa: residency through your own company
For entrepreneurs, setting up a company is often the most practical way to live in Oman. Since the Foreign Capital Investment Law of 2019, foreigners can own 100% of a company for most activities, and the old minimum capital requirement for foreign-owned companies was removed.
Typical path:
- Register a company — on the mainland through the Oman Business Platform, or in a free zone.
- Obtain the municipal licence and a registered office or lease.
- Apply for the investor (partner) residence visa through the company.
- Once the company has labour approvals, it can sponsor visas for staff and the investor can sponsor family members.
The details, including how many visas a new company can obtain, depend on the activity, location and office size. See register a company in Oman with residency for a step-by-step version.
Golden residency: 10-year visa for investors
Oman relaunched its investor residency as a 10-year golden residency in 2025. Reported routes, with a baseline of OMR 200,000 unless stated otherwise:
- Owning a company at least one year old in which your stake in assets is worth OMR 200,000 or more
- Buying a completed unit in an integrated tourism complex (ITC) with a title deed
- Holding government development bonds with at least two years to maturity
- Holding listed shares worth OMR 200,000 or more
- A fixed deposit of OMR 200,000 in an Omani bank for five years
- Owning a company that employs at least 50 Omani nationals
- Nomination by a qualifying foreign-investment company for a partner or senior professional
Benefits include residence for the investor and first-degree relatives without limits on number or age, fast-track airport services and the right to own a property outside ITCs in permitted areas. Some sources still quote the earlier tiers (OMR 250,000 for five years and OMR 500,000 for ten years), so confirm the current route before transferring funds. Our golden visa page and catalogue of qualifying options cover the current conditions.
Family joining visa
A resident can sponsor:
- A spouse
- Children (age and marital-status limits apply, especially for sons)
- Parents, subject to additional conditions
The Royal Oman Police reduced the minimum monthly salary for sponsoring a family from OMR 350 to OMR 150 in 2023. In practice you also need:
- An attested marriage certificate and birth certificates (translated into Arabic or English)
- A copy of the sponsor's resident card and salary certificate or labour contract
- A tenancy agreement in some cases
- Medical tests for family members after arrival
Plan for school costs: most expatriate children attend private or international schools that charge annual fees. Our article on the cost of living in Muscat for a family gives a budget breakdown.
Retirement residence permit
Oman offers a five-year residence permit for retirees who can show a fixed monthly income of at least OMR 4,000. It does not allow employment in Oman. Health insurance and proof of accommodation are usually required.
Study visa
International students can enter on a student visa sponsored by a recognised university or college. Oman does not have a post-study work visa, so graduates must find an employer who will apply for a work permit before the student visa ends.
Can a foreigner become an Omani citizen?
Citizenship is possible but slow. The Omani Nationality Law (Royal Decree 17/2025) requires, for most applicants:
- At least 15 years of continuous legal residence
- Arabic proficiency
- Good conduct and good health
- Financial independence
- Giving up any other nationality, as Oman does not generally allow dual citizenship
Separate, shorter rules apply to certain foreign spouses and children of Omani citizens. A child born in Oman to foreign parents does not acquire Omani nationality by birth.
Step-by-step: applying for an Oman residence visa
- Pick your route using the table above.
- Prepare documents: passport valid for at least six months, photos, educational certificates (attested, for work visas), police clearance certificate if requested, marriage and birth certificates for family, and proof of funds for investor routes.
- Get attestations done early. Foreign documents normally need attestation in the issuing country and by the Omani embassy or foreign ministry.
- Submit the application through the sponsor — employer, your company or family member — via the Royal Oman Police eVisa system and related portals.
- Enter Oman on the issued visa.
- Complete medical tests and fingerprints, then collect your resident card.
- Track renewal dates. Residence cards are renewed online; overstaying leads to daily fines.
Common mistakes that delay residency
- Unattested certificates. The most frequent cause of rejected work permits.
- Choosing a job title reserved for Omanis. The labour clearance will be refused, regardless of experience.
- Moving money for the golden residency before checking eligibility. The investment must be held in the right form and in your own name.
- Long absences. Staying outside Oman for an extended period can lead to cancellation of the residence card; check the ROP rules before long trips.
- Assuming a company licence equals residency. The commercial registration and the investor visa are separate steps with separate conditions.
Is Oman a good place to live?
Oman is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the region, has a stable currency pegged to the US dollar and costs less than most GCC neighbours. The trade-offs are summer heat, a smaller job market than Dubai or Riyadh, and Omanisation rules that limit some professions. For investors, the combination of 100% foreign ownership, no personal income tax until 2028 (and then only above OMR 42,000 a year) and the golden residency makes Oman a realistic long-term base.

Frequently asked questions
How can a foreigner get residency in Oman?
The main routes are an employment visa sponsored by an Omani employer, an investor visa through your own company, the 10-year golden residency for larger investments, a family joining visa sponsored by a resident relative, and a residence permit for retirees with sufficient income.
How much investment is needed for the Oman golden residency?
Under the golden residency programme launched in 2025, the main routes require about OMR 200,000, for example in company capital and assets, listed shares or a five-year bank deposit. It gives a renewable 10-year residence covering first-degree family members.
What salary do I need to sponsor my family in Oman?
The Royal Oman Police lowered the minimum salary for a family joining visa to OMR 150 a month in 2023. Some categories and individual cases may require more, so confirm the current rule before applying.

Yes. Foreign investors who own a registered company can usually obtain an investor residence visa through that company, and the company can sponsor work visas for staff once it has Ministry of Labour approvals.
